According to a new study, electric car owners might save more than £100 each year by adopting “smart charging” to power their vehicles. When customers consume electricity when the demand is low, they are “smart charging,” putting less load on the national system. This includes utilizing electricity late at night, early in the morning, or even when the system is overloaded with renewable energy.
The study, sponsored by Evergreen Smart Power’s FRED project (Flexibly Responsive Energy Delivery), aimed to identify a means to prevent the system from being overwhelmed during peak periods. As a result of the researchers’ findings, they concluded that “a typical EV charger might earn $110 each year by accumulating savings from the half-hourly payment of smart-charged Electric Vehicle charging electricity volumes”
It was also discovered that employing smart charging technology might cut car charging’s carbon footprint by up to 20%. The researchers used an algorithm to monitor and control the charging habits of 250 participants who already owned electric vehicles. The algorithm altered charging periods to maximize efficiency and minimize expenditures.
They discovered that “drivers are generally supportive of the notion of smart charging, but they want real-time visibility and a sense of full control,” as well as “confidence about EV operating costs and the savings available through smart charging.” It was usually found to be more expensive to charge automobiles in the early evening, yet windy afternoons – with greater renewable electricity – were a good period.
The optimal time to charge gadgets was after 4 a.m., according to the study, but without smart technology, incentivizing this is tough. The availability of information about a vehicle’s state-of-charge is the major technological hurdle to a satisfying smart charging experience, according to the study.
Using a specialized app helped users grasp the advantages of the smart charging, all things considered, the app provided a high degree of detail regarding energy use history and savings – and as long as customers trusted a similar app for the commercial product. However, because it couldn’t immediately respond to a participant’s wants, the system was frequently “overly cautious,” according to the researchers, who argue that displays of the technology being utilized at scale with a specialized user interface are required.
“Our research revealed that smart charging through the platform can make a significant difference, especially in situations where individuals are already charging efficiently.” In a statement, Peter Bullock, who is a project manager at the Evergreen company, stated, “It reduces the cost and carbon for cheaper, cleaner driving.”
“The energy we produce – for example, from wind and solar – can be changeable in our evolving green energy system. Fortunately, with electric cars, we can be more flexible with when we consume energy. This is where the smart charging comes in handy, allowing us to build a low-carbon, high-efficiency energy system.”
